MATRADE MARKET DEVELOPMENT GRANT -- MDG
  QUALIFYING CRITERIA
i.
Companies incorporated under the Malaysian Companies Act; 1965;
ii.
Manufacturing companies or companies providing manufacturing related services** with an annual sales turnover of not exceeding RM25 million and with full-time employees of not exceeding 150; and
iii.
At least 60% equity held by Malaysian.
 
  SECTORS
  The scheme is available for SMEs:
SMEs involved in manufacturing products in Malaysia for the export market.
   
SMEs engaged in export of services, which include engineering, construction, architectural, education, healthcare, printing and publishing, information and communication technology, legal, accounting and locally developed franchise.
 
 
Trading companies that meet the following conditions:
Having annual sales turnover of between RM 10 million - RM 25 million
Exporting Made In Malaysia products especially those manufactured by SMEs
Not more than 20% of the company's annual sales is derived from trading in primary commodities
 
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the scheme is to provide a matching grant to assist Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in undertaking activities for the development of export markets.
FORM OF ASSISTANCE
Companies can obtain a 50% matching grant on the approved cost of the eligible activities subject to a maximum of RM60,000 per company. The grant is available for one or more of the eligible activities. Once the grant of RM60,000 is fully utilized, the company is no longer eligible to apply for the grant. The RM60,000 grant is however subject to the availability of funds.
 
  ELIGIBLE ACTIVITIES are:
Participation in trade missions, specialised selling missions and international trade fairs
Participation in Malaysia trade centers overseas
Preparation of promotional items
Promotion of brands overseas
Designing and improving packaging of products
Participation in overseas international tenders
  CLAIMABLE EXPENSES
  Participation in international trade missions, specialized selling missions and international trade fairs
Participation fee paid to the organiser of the event
Economy class airfare for one person. Airport tax, visa fees, excess baggage and insurance premium are not included.
One standard hotel room not exceeding RM200 per night for local international trade fairs and US$200 per night for overseas fairs and missions. The period shall be one day before the fair, duration of the fair and one day after the fair.
Rental of standard booth which is limited to: -
 
-- 9sqm for small items
 
-- 18sqm for big items like furniture and machinery
Rental of space in Malaysia trade center overseas
Shipment of exhibits/samples and promotional materials. Cost does not include such items as import duties, bank guarantee and surcharge.
Construction of standard booth or shared cost of construction on group basis. Cost does not include such items as interpreter services,promoters & sales assistant and rental of audio visual equipment.
Advertisement in trade fair publications.
 
 
For claims for local international trade fair, company must submit a copy of the event report from the fair organizer, which has been certified by an external auditor together with a copy of the auditor's practicing certificate after the event is completed. The report must certify that the fair has fulfilled the criteria of an international fair, as follows:
i)
minimum space occupied for the fair must be at least 1000 sq meters gross, and
ii)
at least 20% of visitors must be foreign visitors, and
iii)
at least 20% net space is rented to foreign exhibitors, or
iv)
at least 20% of exhibitors are foreign exhibitors.
 
For participation in trade missions to promote exports of Malaysian made products and services not organized by Government Agencies, the organizer must apply for approval of the mission programme one month before the event.

Cost incurred in relation to the production of promotional items such as brochures, catalogues, flyers, banners, posters and CD-ROM. Eligible expenses include:
Printed materials
 
- Design concept
 
- Photography
 
- Typesetting/Finished Artwork
 
- Finishing
 
- Colour separation
 
- Colour proof
 
- Printing
 
- Reprint
CD-ROM and VIDEO
 
- Content of text, audio, video, photography, graphic, animation, etc.
 
- Design
 
- Development
- Replication and production
- CD-ROM packaging
Production of CD ROM and Video can be considered for MDG only if it is part of the company's participation in trade fairs, trade missions or participation in MTC Dubai.
Claims for the grant is subject to the acceptance of the promotional items by the MDG Approval Committee.
For printing of promotional items, companies will be eligible to apply up to RM15,000 in grants. Companies must use the services of local printing company to benefit from this grant. Once the RM15,000 is fully utilized, grants will not be given for this activity.
Promotion of brands overseas
This Scheme is for the promotion of Malaysian brand names overseas. The brand must be registered in Malaysia or overseas and the company must own rights to the brand. Eligible expenses include:
Trademark and patent registration fees
Advertisement in printed media
Advertisement in electronic media
Advertisement in the internet
Designing and improving packaging of products
Expenses incurred in designing and improving of product packaging to meet requirements of transportation, storage, international market regulations and for enhancing visual image. The services of a local company must be used to benefit from the grant.
Participation in overseas international tenders
Purchase of tender documents
Legal and translation services
 
 
**Manufacturing related services
Engineering support services such as calibration, electroplating, machining, heat treatment, metal casting, metal forging;
Specialised services such as warehousing, bulk breaking, international procurement centre, haulage;
Maintenance and repair of factory machinery and equipment;
Software development such as CAD, CAM, CAE, ERP, CIM, SCM, CRM;
Automation of production line;
Design houses; and
Packaging services.
 
 
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Claims for reimbursement for all eligible activities must be submitted within 3 months of completion of the activity with the original receipts or copies certified by External Auditors and invoices.
 
Companies are encouraged to apply for the matching grant at least one month before undertaking the activity. This is to ascertain if the company or activity is eligible for the grant.
 
For preparation of promotional items, promotion of brands overseas and designing and improving packaging, companies must submit the application for the grant one month before undertaking the activity.
All supporting documents that companies must provide when applying for eligibility of the grant and submitting claims is described in the MDG application form and the checklist attached to the form. Companies are advised to submit all the relevent document when applying for the MDG.
